Context Window
A context window is the maximum length of conversation or text that an AI model (such as a chatbot) can consider and remember at once when generating a response.
How it works
It is usually measured in tokens (such as words or character fragments). This window limits how much information the model can process at once; if the input is too long, anything beyond the window is forgotten, which affects the coherence and accuracy of the response. The size of the context window is therefore a key indicator of an AI model's capability.
Examples
- 1.When summarizing long documents, the model needs a large context window to understand the entire file at once.
- 2.In complex multi-turn conversations, a sufficient context window lets the AI remember the key points discussed earlier.
- 3.When writing long articles or code, the model needs to refer back to earlier text to keep style and logic consistent.
