OAuth

OAuth is a secure authorization protocol that lets you grant an application (such as a social media management tool) access to your data on another service (such as your Twitter account) without sharing your password.

How it works

Here's how it works: when you grant authorization, the service provider (such as Google) issues the requesting app a temporary, scoped access token instead of your actual password. This greatly improves security, since the app never obtains your login credentials, and you can revoke its access at any time.

Examples

  • 1.Signing in to a new website or mobile app with your Google or Facebook account
  • 2.Granting a fitness app access to the workout data on your smartwatch
  • 3.Allowing a project management tool to access and sync your Google Calendar
